It Pours!

How rain is both a blessing and a curse

When it rains, sometimes it pours, and boy, has it been coming down. But water is a cleansing force when we need it and even when we least expect it. Like any other element, it is necessary for our survival, but if untamed, it can cause great devastation. It has been raining all over the world. From China to Germany, to Indonesia, and all over the US. This past July 4th, Americans were still asking questions while demanding answers to the devastating floods that hit the Guadeloupe River in Texas.  It caused it to rise by twenty feet in the middle of the night in less than an hour, killing over 130 people. Many of them were children who had just arrived at Camp Mystic summer camp.

Now the water that nourishes our bodies, our spirits, and in those long hot showers, even our minds. That same cleansing water has transmuted into salty tears pouring out from grieving family members left behind in bewilderment. Overwhelmed by sorrow for not only the families in the great state of Texas, but for our fellow humans in so many other regions of the world that have been overcome by rain that pours.

The truth of the matter is that now so many people will never look at rain the same way again. That it won’t only be dreary, melancholy Mondays when it’s wet outside and you'd rather stay in. Rather, for a long time to come, the rain will be seen as a reminder of a tragic memory shared broadly amongst people all over the world as tragic events that they cannot wash clean.

As someone who has experienced loss. I remember those hot showers not getting me quite clean. Nothing could wash away the sudden loss of my three-year-old daughter, no matter how hot the water, and no matter how much the soap lathered. Water suddenly no longer cleansed or nourished me like it once had. Rather, my soul was seemingly untouchable by the power of H2O.

"The wound of agony that resides deep in the essence of who you are will be nourished."

Though over time, the wound of agony that resides deep in the essence of who you are will be nourished.. Down in the depths of your being, eventually it shall begin to be gently soothed by that same water. Little by little, you start stepping out of the shower cleaner than the shower before. Melancholy Mondays are filled with less disappointment and more gratitude for life and its small blessings. Like the sunshine, the sunsets, and then again the rain. And in the same places, cities and towns, that were overwhelmed by rain and mud. You will see the seeds of life sprout, grow, and then bloom. And even still, those salty tears again will cleanse and sustain the soul.

Finally, I wanted to touch on what is happening in the world around us. If it is happening to one of us, it is happening to all of us. The Lion’s Den radio show, with me as the host, “When It Rains,” discusses this very topic of the power of rain in its various iterations. Listen in to how we discuss the power of water, especially when it rains.
