Hey there, loves! It’s your lovely lady lioness Ebonylion. The hostess with the mostess, artist, truth-teller, and your mid-day and late-night guide to all things soulful. As of today, you’re talking to the latest artist to grace the cover of Speak Up Sis magazine. Their summer series happens to be in June. So in the name of Black Music Appreciation Month, it only makes sense to tell you why black people and music are a magical combination.
Let’s start with what we’re not! Number one, black music is far from uninteresting, with a rich history of sounds, instruments, and rhythms that draw from every place on glorious planet earth. Black music represents a dynamic culture that is always evolving. Every time we look deep into human history, there we always find a map that circles back to melanated roots.
That’s what I love about our heart-to-heart conversations. The Lion’s Den is where we talk about life, love, and music. Every time I hop off the air. I find a new appreciation for those who came before me. My ancestors paved the way for my own personal musical aspirations. Our discussions bring me that much closer to you and the musical thread that connects us all.
Yes, it’s true that not all skin folk are kin folk. But past influences might have far closer connections than we thought. Kenny Gamble, known for pioneering the “Philly Sound,” formed the Black Music Association, and together with President Jimmy Carter, declared June Black Music Appreciation Month in 1979. So, President Carter was down for the cause. For he was known to bridge many racial barriers during that time.
Fun recent fact. You’re going to want to lean into this one, loves. I told you there was going to be some magic tea to spill. Well, just recently as last year, an interesting discovery was made. Our late President Jimmy Carter is the cousin of the legendary record label owner Berry Gordy. Read the details from my fellow Medium author Heather Quinlan. https://heatherquinlan.medium.com/jimmy-carter-and-his-cousin-berry-gordy-e0adab00528d

Guess somewhere down that DNA thread, Mr. Carter had some melanated roots of his own. So maybe kinfolk and skin folk were connected much closer than we previously thought. Reminds us that you can’t judge a book by its cover. Can I get an Amen? Regardless, there was a tie that bound us all. A connection that was magically kismet, birthing a vision that acknowledged an appreciation for a culture’s true artistry.
